This month at EUROPEAN ROTORS, we presented Airbus Helicopters with a very special creation: an upcycled helicopter skateboard crafted from a real helicopter door. This project brings together creativity, sustainability, and the circular spirit that drives the aerospace industry forward.

The material used for this upcycled helicopter skateboard comes from a helicopter dismantled by Optima Aero. After all serviceable components are recovered, inspected, and returned to circulation, we are often left with composite materials that pose a major challenge. These thermoset composites cannot currently be recycled or reused within aerospace applications. As part of our commitment to responsible dismantling, we are constantly searching for innovative ways to handle this limitation.

At Optima Aero, we make every effort to dismantle, reuse, and recycle as much material as possible. Since no viable recycling solutions exist yet for composites, we have begun exploring creative paths to give these materials a second life instead of sending them to waste. Transforming a helicopter door into an upcycled helicopter skateboard is one of the initiatives that helps us raise awareness around circularity while testing new possibilities for non‑recyclable materials.

This skateboard is more than a symbolic gift. It reflects our shared values with Airbus Helicopters—innovation, responsibility, and the belief that the aerospace industry can lead the way in sustainability. By reimagining components that would otherwise be discarded, we highlight the potential of upcycling across the sector.

We look forward to continuing this collaborative journey toward a more sustainable future. For more insights into our circular economy initiatives, feel free to explore our Sustainability page.

A warm thank‑you to Laurent Vautherin and Pierre‑Mathieu Bremond for their continued support and enthusiasm around this project.
